The damage/repair protocol is for the most part, the status quo in the skin care profession.  It asserts that a calculated damage to the skin, such as professional  peels, microdermabrasion and acid based home care products, will essentially stimulate healthy collagen production resulting in healthy skin.  However, the results of 25 or so years of utilizing this protocol have been quite to the contrary;  what we are seeing is over-exfoliated skin that is stripped, thinned, sensitized, inflamed and has actually become more vulnerable to environmental assaults, not less. In actuality, the skin only needs to be exfoliated once every 2 weeks to a month.  With continuous daily exfoliation,  the cells do not have their natural time frame to heal and repair themselves and to form into healthy whole viable cells.  In addition, cells can only divide so many times within a certain time frame before cell senescence (cell death) happens. This results in a mottled, weak looking skin, that in time shows skin abnormalities.   We also need to maintain the natural protective skin barrier, rather than continually assaulting and stripping it away.  It is there for a reason, to protect and be a barrier to prevent trans-epidermal water loss.  On another note, a skin treated daily with acidic products, is continually attempting to re- balance its PH from acid to alkaline, thereby forming a calcified, more toughened skin as opposed to a soft healthy vibrant skin.
